Dressing for Success

The interviewer is likely to make an impression of you by the way you dress.  You should dress in a manner that is professionally appropriate for the job that you are applying for. This does not always mean wearing a suit.  When in doubt, dress in a conservative manner.

When you dress professionally, you show respect for yourself, the interviewer, and the company. You  are more likely to be taken seriously when you present yourself in a professional manner..

The dressing guidelines below are commonly accepted as appropriate for interviewing.

Unisex Tips
  •  Your attire should be comfortable and fit well.
  • Avoid bright colours (yellow, red, pink, lime green, orange etc).
  • Clothing should be neat, clean, and pressed.
  • You should shower the morning of the interview and wear deodorant and lotion.
  • You should not wear cologne or aftershave, to avoid allergic reactions.
  • You should have fresh breath, brush your teeth before you leave for the interview.
  • Do not eat nor smoke directly before the interview.
  • Your hair should be neat, clean, and conservative - avoid distracting hairstyles.
  • Your shoes should be polished and in good condition
Men
  • If you are wearing a suit, ensure that it includes a matching jacket and pants, dress shirt, tie, coordinating socks and dress shoes.
  • A dark-colored suit (navy blue and black) with light colored (white, baby blue) shirt is highly recommended.
  • Avoid flashy ties, keep it simple
  • Your shoes should match your belt.
  • Shave your face the day before/morning of the interview
  • Trim your full beard or mustache (if you have one), keeping it neat.
Women
  • If you are wearing a suit, ensure that it includes a matching jacket and pants/skirt, conservative shirt and dress shoes.
  • A dark-colored suit (navy blue and black) with light colored (white, baby blue) shirt is highly recommended.
  • You should not wear anything that is tight, bright, short, or sheer
  • Knee-length skirts are suggested. Very long skirts, may be considered too trendy.
  • Make-up and nail polish should be neutral to your skin tone. Avoid very long nails.
  • Keep your jewelry and hair accessories minimum
  • Shoes should be conservative and fairly low-heeled.
  • Do not wear shoes with an open toe or back.
  • If you are wearing hose, wear a colour that matches your skin tone. Ensure they are fitted without runs/snags. (Hint: walk with an extra pair)
